The week 04.01. – 08.01.2021

The first week of the year was, as often in history, an encouragingly positive one. Despite the loss on the first trading day of the year, the S&P500 closed the week above average in positive territory. Over the last twelve years (2010 – 2021), 83% of the time the S&P500 closed the first days of the year positively, with an average of +0.88%. The median for this period is 1.35%. Stock markets were unaffected by the tensions in Washington DC, as there was more focus on positive news, mainly related to Covid19 (the vaccination campaign launched, or the economic aid already agreed for the people (helicopter money)). The S&P500 closed the week with a gain of 1.60%. The price of oil rose by about 8.00% and the T-bonds are the winners of the week with a gain of over 18.00%. Gold prices lost a little over 4.00%.
